MOVEMENT… OUR BODIES NEED TO MOVE

By Don Cassano, MPT, DPT, OCS

Movement, Applied Functional Movement based on Applied Functional Science(AFS) is what we, at Elite Physical Therapy, focus on when helping you achieve your goals. When you are thinking about your workout routine or rehabilitation plan it is vital that you consider how the body moves, in essence how you move throughout the day. Think THREE planes of movement. Think about exercises that incorporate all these planes of movement in order to best train you for what your day, your life demands.

Simply put, this graphic illustrates the body performing movement in flexion/extension, rotation and side bending each direction. Then, think combining these movements. This is exactly what your body does thousands of time throughout the day. Restoring lost movement and maintaining movement are the keys to “movement longevity”.

Watch this VIDEO by Brandi Thiels, PTA of Elite Physical Therapy explaining this concept and how to incorporate the three planes of motion into exercises to increase your mobility. Click HERE for even more exercises and movements further expanding on this concept.

At Elite Physical Therapy we have a team of clinicians that have completed a 40-week mentorship program in Applied Functional Science through the Gray Institute. This vigorous program converges Physical Science, Biological Science and Behavioral Science. The deep dive into the foundational truths of each of these are the basis of the why and how of movement.
